Two items of news today! One is that Malcolm Birtwell is organising a West Runton Reunion to be held on the evening of Saturday 4th October 2014 at West Runton Social Club. Contact Malcolm at firstname.lastname@example.org for tickets and more information.
Secondly, I have just published my first novel, 'The Scam' about budding Rock Star, Gee Stringer, who starts his own punk band in the seventies, plays at a few Norfolk music venues, meets Lemmy at Runton, and tours with Iron Maiden, Guns N' Roses and The Stones. It's available from Amazon for download as an e-book but don't worry if you don't have a Kindle, the Amazon Kindle page has a free app you can download so you can read the book on a Smartphone, tablet or on your computer. Just to say that I am afraid 'FLO' really has sold out this time, and there are definitely no plans to reprint. I'm sorry if you were unable to obtain a copy. Thanks to everyone for their all their encouragement and support before, during and after the launch of the book in October 2006 - five years ago! I really couldn't have done it without you.

The 5th Reunion, held at the Lighthouse, took place on Saturday 12 September. Numbers were slightly down but those who attended enjoyed music and info from Magic Moments Disco. The Shy Fly/Fat Alice gig at North Walsham on Saturday produced a good night of live music although it would have been nice to see a few more people there.
Sunday 3 May 2009
The 5th Reunion is announced - it will be held at The Lighthouse, Walcott on the 12th September - together with news of a bonus event on 13th November with former Links support band Shy Fly playing in North Walsham.
Monday 29 September 2008
The 4th Reunion on Saturday was a great success, with around 200 people enjoying an evening of fantastic music and many of them meeting friends they hadn't seen for years. Thanks to everyone who attended, but especially to the bands Bo-Nidle and Shy Fly, Magic Moments disco and landlord Steve Bullimore who made it all possible.
Thursday 25 September 2008
With two days to go until the 4th Reunion, excitement is mounting. The DJ has lined up some great tracks to play for us, and the two bands are both ready to rock! I will be on North Norfolk Radio tomorrow morning, so tune in if you can.
Tuesday 27 May 2008
Details of the 2008 Reunion are confirmed. There will be a disco this year plus two live bands. BO-NIDLE are making a return visit, featuring Harry from Spencer's People, and SHY FLY are reforming with Phil and Neil from the original 70's line-up. The event is being held once again at the Lighthouse Inn, Walcott, by kind invitation of Steve Bullimore.

A belated welcome to 2008 and a big 'thank you' to everyone who has visited the website and helped us pass the 4,000 visitor mark. It has been a busy winter - the book was reprinted before Christmas and sales of it are going well, plans are underway for the next Reunion on 27 September, and two Newsletters have been posted out to members of the 'FLO CLUB'. Membership is now £3 per year so please tell any of your friends not on the 'Net. It isn't too late to join and they can buy back copies of the Newsletters for 75p each which include excerpts from the 'What FLO Said Next' webpage, Reunion news and pages from the A - Z band list. Thanks to the free magazines including Cromer Crab-Line and the Holt Times for printing an article containing this information.

Saturday 23 December 2006
Thanks to support of local retailers, in particular Jarrolds of Norwich and Cromer, Bertram A Watts in Sheringham and Larners of Holt, the second print run has almost sold out. I have 25 books left for emergency use! It seems many people will be finding 'FLO' in their Christmas stocking. Thanks to all of you who helped spread the word, and also to David Clayton of Radio Norfolk (Sundays 9am till Noon) for his numerous 'plugs'. Merry Christmas and a happy 2007 to you all.
Saturday 25 November 2006
The first batch of books has almost sold out and, in response to demand, a further print run has been ordered which will arrive this week.
On Thursday I spent a very pleasant afternoon with John and Joan Eldiss, who live in one of the houses built on the site of Cromer Links. A photo has been added to the 'What FLO Said Next' page, along with a photo of what replaced West Runton Pavilion.
Saturday 11 November 2006
This website has now registered over 1,500 hits, more than 500 of them during the last seven weeks! Thanks for your interest. Also thanks to everyone who has bought a book from Jarrolds during the last week - 'WHAT FLO SAID' is at number 5 in their local best-seller chart, according to today's Eastern Daily Press.
Friday 27 October 2006
Sales of the book are going well. The local bookshops who are stocking it have all taken a second delivery of books and there is a steady stream of orders arriving through the post and via paypal. I will be at North Walsham Community Centre tomorrow night (Saturday 28 October) for the Scratch Band gig, and will have copies of the book for sale during the interval. I am being interviewed on Radio Norfolk at 3pm on Monday 30 October. Thanks to everyone for their kind comments and support.
Monday 16 October 2006
Thanks to all who attended the Reunion on Saturday. It was a very successful evening with an attendance of around 200 enjoying Moods Disco, with music from the bands who appeared at the venues and snippets of information about some of their appearances. Tony Spencer and Alfie Hall, formerly vocalist and guitarist with local band Spencer's People - who played at the Links several times in the early '70s - gave an impromptu performance of 'Georgia on my Mind.' Sales of the book 'WHAT FLO SAID' - which was launched at the event - got off to a flying start.
Friday 13 October 2006
Well, quite an eventful week! Featured in the EDP on Monday, on North Norfolk Radio Wednesday morning, in the North Norfolk News on Thursday and Radio Norfolk Thursday evening. Signs are looking good for a packed venue on Saturday. Make sure you don't miss it. The books arrived yesterday - I'm very pleased with them and can't wait for you all to see them! Till Saturday...
Saturday 7 October 2006

'WHAT FLO SAID' is currently with the publisher, and preparations are being made for printing in the very near future. Please watch this space for details of the book launch - to be announced shortly.
Monday 19 June 2006
Well, after a long pause on my part I am pleased to announce that the book is finished! Entitled 'WHAT FLO SAID' it is currently being proof-read and quotations for printing are being obtained. I have been able to incorporate most of the stories, information and photos kindly provided during the year I spent researching. It has been extremely time-consuming but I hope, when you see it, you will agree it has been very worthwhile. Thanks for your help and support - I couldn't have done it without you!
Thursday 30 March 2006
Work is going well with the writing. I am up to chapter nine, probably well over a third of the way into the book. Still waiting for one or two people to contact me with band line-ups and photos, but hope to hear from them by Easter.
Sunday 26 February 2006
The research phase of the book is now coming to an end and I am ready to concentrate on putting all the facts and stories together in some sort of order.
I have been lent over forty photos taken over the course of a couple of months in 1981. Unfortunately, they are not all labelled and I am trying to find out who some of them are. They have been posted on the website in the hope that someone might recognise them. (These were removed 19.6.06)
The Reunion photos have been swapped again.
Tuesday 24 January 2006
Well, another month has almost passed, and I thought I ought to post an update. More photos have been scanned, more people have been contacted and another large telephone bill has been received! My target is to have spoken to everyone who has expressed an interest in the project by the end of February. If you haven't yet contacted me, please do so soon. Thanks to everyone for their support. Oh - and I've also changed the Reunion photos again!
Thursday 29 December 2005
The final selection of Reunion pictures have been added to the Website. I'm sorry if you were there but did not appear on any of the photos. Thanks again for attending and making it a very special evening. I have met, spoken to and e-mailed more people who have stories, photos and memorabilia to share. Things are looking on target for a 2006 launch of the book, so keep checking the Website for regular updates. Hope you all had a good Christmas and wishing you a rockin' New Year!
Saturday 26 November 2005
A different selection of photos from the Reunion has been added to the Website. See Reunion Pix page. I have carried out a couple of in-depth interviews and kindly been loaned various photos, slides and posters to copy for the book. Don't forget to get in touch soon if you have something you would like included, and please urge your friends to do the same!
Thursday 3rd November 2005
Have finally added a selection of Reunion photos to the Website (see Reunion pix). Will put a different set on in a couple of weeks so please check the Website regularly to see if you are there!
Sunday 16th October 2005
Over 200 people attended the Reunion last night, travelling from as far away as Kings Lynn, Cambridge and even Surrey! Thanks to Steve Bullimore at Walcott Lighthouse and Dave from Moods Disco for helping make it a great night. Thanks also to Radio Norfolk, North Norfolk Radio, the Eastern Daily Press and the North Norfolk News for helping to publicise the event, and to all of you who put up posters, handed out leaflets and rang up your mates! We hope to do the same again next year.
Wednesday 12th October 2005
A two-page article on the book and the Reunion appeared in yesterday's Eastern Daily Press, and a similar feature should be included in this week's North Norfolk News. Following the EDP article, I have been invited along to Radio Norfolk to give an interview. The show is being broadcast on Friday from 3pm. There is talk of mini-buses being hired to bring people to the Reunion, so hopefully we will get a good crowd.
Sunday 9th October 2005
With less than a week to go until the Reunion, preparations are almost complete. I have spoken to Dave, the DJ, who is arranging to bring along plenty of tracks by bands who appeared at Runton and the Links. I have also compiled a list of most of the bands who appeared at the venues (almost 1,200 names!). This will be on the wall for people to view, along with lots of photos. Hopefully all this will generate plenty of memories. Looking forward to seeing you all there.
Tuesday 21 September 2005
Working hard publicising the Reunion - distributing fliers, putting ads in free mags and trying to get a mention on radio and in local papers. If you can help by putting up a poster in your local post office, favourite music store, where you work etc, please let me know, also if you need a few fliers to hand out to people who might be interested, please ring me on 01362 684175 or send me an e-mail.
Saturday 3 September 2005
The Reunion is going ahead! It will be held on Saturday 15 October 2005 at the Lighthouse Inn, Walcott. Good progress is being made with the book, I have interviewed the former owners of both venues and have many leads to follow up, and loads of stories and photos to include.
Wednesday 8th June 2005
I am gradually widening my network of contacts, thanks to the many people who are still phoning and e-mailing me. I have been offered the use of a marquee towards the end of the Summer to host a reunion, where people could get together to discuss their stories and perhaps bring memorabilia for me to copy. Thanks to 'Bully' for the suggestion. I think this is a really good idea - please let me know what you think.
Wednesday 25 May 2005
I have decided to write a book on West Runton Pavilion and the Royal Links Pavilion, Cromer. Following a feature on North Norfolk Radio last Thursday, and my letter appearing in the Eastern Daily Press on Monday, I have had much encouragement and support. People have phoned me with their memories, given me further leads and contacts, and offered to lend me photos, posters, albums etc. Thanks very much to you all. I will keep in touch and let you know how it progresses. Please continue to spread the word, and watch this space!
